Discussion philosophique en anglais – Monthly debate in English: Race

Débat interdisciplinaire en anglais au sein du campus CLSH à l'Université de Lorraine, Nancy, organisé par le département de philosophie et les Archives Henri Poincaré - Philosophie et Recherches sur les Sciences et les Technologies. 

 

Lors de cette troisième rencontre, nous nous pencherons sur la question de l'identité liée à la couleur de la peau (ou au réfus d'accorder une quelconque pertinence à cette dernière), pour croiser les perceptions américaines et françaises. Le prétexte pour cette discussion a été fourni l'été dernier par la question posée outre Atlantique : qui a gagné la Coupe du Monde, la France ou, comme le voulait Trevor Noah, l'Afrique? 

 

Participeront à la discussion Jeremy Tranmer & Richard Somerset (le département d'anglais), Anna C. Zielinska (département de philosophie) et Mike Latham de IUT Charlemagne.

US-based South African comedian Trevor Noah has famously stated that "Africa won the World Cup". After several criticisms (one coming from the French Ambassador in the US), he added: "When I am saying, 'They are African', I am not saying it as a way to exclude them from their Frenchness, but using it as a way to include them in my Africanness."

The discussion that surrounded Noah's statements will be a pretext to try to understand the difference in perception of racial and cultural identity in the US and in France. 

Is the French official color-blindness a virtue or a vice? Does it help to fight racism or, on the contrary, it ignores the realities of race and racism altogether? 

 

Discussion will be led by Jeremy Tranmer & Richard Somerset from the English Studies Department, Anna C. Zielinska from the Philosophy Department and Mike Latham from the IUT Charlemagne.
