Michael Backes est professeur en informatique à l'Université de la Sarre et directeur fondateur et président du CISPA - Helmholtz i.G à Saarbrucken (Allemagne). Il recevra le 1er octobre prochain les insignes et titre de docteur honoris causa de l'Université de Lorraine lors d'une cérémonie qui se déroulera au Loria. A noter qu'il donnera une conférence (en anglais) à l'issue de la cérémonie : Tackling the Grand Challenges of Cybersecurity Research: The Case of Security of Autonomous Systems.
"Quel lien avez-vous avec le Loria et plus généralement avec la Lorraine ?
J’ai toujours eu un lien fort avec la France et en particulier avec la Lorraine puisque j’ai grandi en Saarland, avec ses multiples connections et entrelacements avec la Grande Région. J’ai toujours été très attaché à ma région d’origine, motivé par l’envie d’y contribuer, de la faire prospérer et grandir, en particulier grâce aux activités de recherche en partenariat avec le Loria, telles que notre centre de recherche collaboratif sur la compréhension et la maîtrise de notre vie privée en ligne.
Que représente le titre de Doctor Honoris Causa pour vous ?
Je suis profondément flatté et honoré par cette distinction, notamment parce que je suis encore jeune. Je n’y avais pas réellement pensé avant d’être nominé, ce fut donc une surprise totale. Je suis particulièrement reconnaissant envers mes collègues et amis du domaine de la recherche en Lorraine pour ce titre.
Quels sont vos projets ?
Je dévoue actuellement tout mon temps et toute mon énergie à la création du CISPA – Helmholz Center à Sarrebruck, qui s’efforce de réfléchir aux grands défis de la cyber sécurité avec une approche holistique. C’est l’œuvre de toute ma vie."

"What link do you have with Loria and more generally with the Lorraine ?
I ever since had a strong connection with France and in particular the Lorraine since I grew up in the State of Saarland, with its manifold connections and intertwinement within the Greater Region. I have always felt strongly connected to my home area, driven by the desire to contribute my share to make this area grow and prosper. This in particular includes, amongst others, longstanding joint research activities with Loria, such as in our joint collaborative research center on understanding and controlling online privacy.
What does the title of Doctor Honoris Causa represents for you ?
I feel deeply flattered and honored by the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, in particular because I am allowed to receive this honor already at my young age. This is a title and honor that I have not given any thoughts to prior to receiving the notification, and that hence come fully unexpected to me. I am particularly thankful to receive this from my colleagues and friends in research at the Lorraine.
What are your projects?
I’m currently spending all my time and energy on the build-up of the CISPA Helmholtz Center in Saarbruecken, which strives for holistically targeting the grand challenges of cybersecurity research. This is my lifework."
